This easy crochet hot pad is double sided, making it thick enough to protect your kitchen surfaces from hot dishes. Find the free crochet pattern below.

Crochet Hot Pad Yarn + Stitches

For this crochet hot pad, it is important to use cotton yarn. Hot pads are used to put hot dishes on to avoid ruining kitchen surfaces. Because hot dishes are involved, cotton yarn is best. Acrylic yarn can melt under hot temperatures.

I knew I wanted this hot pad to be thick, so I used half double crochets with a 4.00mm crochet hook. I also ended up making two sides to make it extra thick.

To give this simple circle hot pad just a little more detail, I did a modified picot stitch around the edge. It gives it a pretty, delicate touch to what would otherwise be a plain circle.

Crochet Pattern Notes

I used almost an entire skein for this hot pad, you may want to have extra just incase your tension is a bit looser.

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

I’m using a modified picot stitch in this pattern, but I will be referring to it as the picot stitch.

Modified picot stitch: sc, ch 2, sc (all in one stitch)

Dimensions: 9” in width

Abbreviations: (US terms)

Ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet
