Materials

You will need a medium, worsted weight yarn for this project. I used I Love This Yarn! in Red, Jelly Bean, White, and Christmas.

The Christmas color is the sparkly variegated yarn. I really loved this touch of sparkle but if you prefer without, there are variegated yarns in the same color way without the sparkle.

For the crochet hook, I used a size K/6.5 mm.

I really like using a larger hook for the I Love This Yarn! specifically, because it is a good worsted weight yarn. Other yarns that are worsted weight tend to feel a bit thin to me (it depends on the color too!). If you are a seasoned crocheter and have used various yarns, you may understand my thoughts on this.

Granny Chevron/Granny Ripple Stitch

Personally, I refer to this stitch as the granny chevron stitch, but I think the better known name for it is the granny ripple stitch.

No matter what you call it, this stitch uses the granny stitch with a zig zag effect. Along with the color changes, it gives you a beautiful pattern.

In the written pattern below, I refer to the 3 double crochets that we use for the granny squares/granny stitch as a cluster. I felt this condensed the pattern a bit more because at first glance, there is a lot to keep track of.

If you get lost within the written pattern, I highly recommend watching the video tutorial that goes along with it. It will all make sense once you have the visual.

Essentially, we are making granny stitches along the row but using increases to create peaks and decreases to make the valleys. Once you get to Row 3, it’s smooth sailing from there. You will just need to repeat that row for the remainder of the blanket.

Crochet Christmas Blanket Overview

This crochet blanket uses worsted weight yarn in the traditional Christmas colors with a 6.5mm crochet hook.

For the written pattern, it is based off of the sample I made, which is a lapghan size (43″ x 56″).

In the PDF version, I have calculated several other sizes including yarn amounts, beginning chain numbers, and row counts. The sizes included in the PDF are baby, lapghan, throw, twin, queen, and king sized blankets.

We will be changing colors for this blanket. The stripe pattern is as follows: 6 green, 6 red, 2 white, 2 Christmas (variegated), 2 white.

TIP: I recommend leaving the ends out to weave in later vs crocheting over them when changing the colors. With the granny stitch, there are a lot of holes/gaps so the ends can’t be properly crocheted over.
