A Twist on The Classic Granny Square
You may have noticed that these aren’t your typical granny squares in this crochet blanket. The classic granny square typically uses clusters of double crochets but I used different stitches to add texture and dimension to these squares.
Instead of all double crochets, I used some special stitches: front post and back post double crochets in the mix to give it that extra squish.
You could say it looks similar to a solid granny square but again, utilizing those special stitches with color changes to give it a little something extra.
Included with the written pattern of the granny square is a video tutorial, so if you are unsure about the stitches – there is plenty of visual instruction for it!
Materials Needed for the Granny Square Blanket
For this blanket, I made it festive by using red, green, and ivory sparkly yarn. The yarn I used is I Love This Yarn! which is an acrylic, worsted weight yarn. You can use any brand you’d prefer in a worsted weight for this blanket pattern.
My finished granny square blanket came out to 40″ x 40″ and I used the following yarn amounts: 2 skeins I Love This Yarn! in Forest and Cranberry and 5 skeins I Love This Yarn! Metallic in Ivory. This size is perfect for a lap blanket.
If you want to make a larger blanket that measures 60″ x 60″, you will need the following yarn amounts: 3 skeins I Love This Yarn! in Forest and Cranberry and 10 skeins I Love This Yarn! Metallic in Ivory. This size is perfect for a throw blanket to display on your sofa or couch.
Of course, these colors listed above are the ones I chose but feel free to get creative and use the colors you prefer! I did make mine festive for the holidays, so you may find it more appropriate to use different colors.
I found myself with a good amount of leftover yarn. You can use this yarn to make your blanket just a bit bigger or you can make a matching pillow!
For the crochet hook, I used a 6.00 mm crochet hook size. This matched well with the worsted weight yarn and I do tend to crochet fairly loose, so be sure to check your tension when making these squares. Each square measures about 5″.
You will also need a tapestry needle and scissors handy for weaving in ends and cutting yarn.

The first row and odd numbered rows will be alternating color combination #2 + #4.
The second row and even numbered rows will be alternating color combinations #1 + #3.
You can use any method of joining you prefer. I like to single crochet my squares together using this method here.
Use the ivory colored yarn with the 6.00 mm crochet hook to join the squares.
