Granny Square Project Ideas
I will be making a Christmas crochet blanket with these festive Christmas granny squares but there are many other projects you can complete with these squares!
Joining the squares are an important step in making a granny square project. I have my preferred method of joining squares, which is crocheting them together. You can see the full tutorial of that here.
Besides a blanket, you can make a pillow cover, a sweater/cardigan, a purse or bag, a skirt for your Christmas tree, etc. The possibilities are endless!

Christmas Granny Square Pattern Overview
For this pattern, you will use any worsted, medium weight yarn. I used acrylic yarn since I will be making a Christmas blanket with it.
The pattern is similar to a solid granny square if you have made one before. The only difference is, we will be using front and back post double crochets to add dimension and texture to the center of the squares.
The square is only a total of 4 rounds and the last round is all double crochets to give it a bit more structure. The front and back post stitches tend to scrunch up a bit as it’s so squishy and stretchy. The outer round of just double crochets really helps keep the square shape.
Make as many squares as you need for your project. You can make a square blanket or a rectangle blanket depending on how you lay out the squares. Of course, you can make other projects as stated above.

Pattern Notes
You will be changing colors after each row, use the color changing method you prefer. I simply cut the working yarn, loop in the next color, tie the tails together and begin the next row.
Keep a bit of a looser tension when making the front and back post stitches to make it easier as well as to give it the height it needs.
I made four color combinations:
- Ivory, green, ivory, red
- Red, ivory, green, ivory
- Ivory, red, ivory, green
- Green, ivory, red, ivory
Dimensions/Gauge: Each square measures 5”
