Crochet Pullover Dog Sweater
This free crochet pattern makes a sweater for your dog that needs to be pulled over their head to wear. It is also helpful to have the crochet sweatertried on while making the project to ensure you are on the right path to having a sweater that fits your pet.
Because of this, be sure your dog or pet is okay with this! They will also need to be okay with taking measurements around their bodies. In the instructions, you will need to measure them in order to find the right size sweater to make.
What Size Crochet Dog Sweater Should I Make?
Below you will find a size chart to help you choose the size sweater you need to crochet for your pup or pet.
There is a chart that gives you measurements of the dog for each size as well as a chart that tells you the dimensions of the actual sweater.
Please be sure to measure your dog before beginning the project. Once you have determined the size needed, you will need to make a gauge swatch to ensure your project will come out the correct size.
To make a gauge swatch, simply crochet the number of stitches x rows stated in the pattern to ensure it matches the measurement of swatch stated in pattern. Increase hook size if swatch is too small and decrease hook size if swatch to too large.
Custom Fit Crochet Dog Sweater
If you would like to make a custom fit sweater, be sure to check out my step by step tutorial here. I think this project is very beginner friendly, especially the custom step by step tutorial. I also have a video tutorial for a custom fit sweater with cable detailing – you can find that here.
A custom fit is ideal for very large dogs, very tiny dogs, or dogs who fall in between sizes. You will find a custom fit is also great for dogs who have unique body shapes (Dachshunds, Pit bulls, Grey Hounds, etc.)

How much yarn will I need for these different sizes. I want to make a medium and large dog sweater.
Maria Weaber
I can say I needed almost one full skein (185 yards) for a medium sweater so you will probably need two for a large
