Looking for a fun and useful crochet project? Learn how to make a book sleeve to protect your favorite reads with this easy-to-follow free pattern.

Crochet Stitch for Book Sleeve Cover

For this book sleeve, I wanted a fun retro feel so I went with the granny stitch. I think it turned out so cute and fun!

However, I do recommend adding a lining to these covers to add to the durability to the book sleeve as well as an extra layer of protection for the book. I have a tutorial on how to add a lining to a crochet bag that would work perfectly for this project. You can find that tutorial here.

In general, I think more of a closed stitch would be a better choice for a crochet book sleeve if you don’t want to add a lining. A simple single crochet (sc) or half double crochet (hdc) would be great stitches to use for a project like this as well.

Yarn for Crochet Book Sleeves

For my book sleeve, I used acrylic, worsted weight yarn because that is what I had on hand. I used a Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cake in the color Oyster. I think the color changes worked out perfectly for the paperback size book sleeve I crocheted.

Cotton yarn would also be a good option for book sleeves. Cotton yarn is more durable, less likely to pill over time, and eco-friendly. This would definitely be my go to choice for a crochet book sleeve cover.

Materials

Worsted weight yarn (Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cake in Oyster used in book sleeve shown)

5.00mm crochet hook

Tapestry needle & Scissors

Fabric, needle and thread for lining

Pattern Notes

This pattern includes two different sized book sleeves. The bigger one is to fit a standard hardcover book and the smaller on is to fit a standard paperback book.

If you would like to make a different size book sleeve, you can customize the width by adding or subtracting the beginning chain by 2 and adding or subtracting rows until it is the length of your book.

I suggest adding a lining to the book sleeve, especially the one made for a hardback. You can find a tutorial here.
