Crochet Bean Stitch

The crochet bean stitch has one of the best textures I’ve come across in crochet! It’s almost like the popcorn stitch or puff stitch but I think the main difference in textures is that it’s not as “bobbly”. It’s more subtle but in the best way possible.

To set up the crochet bean stitch, you will start with a row of single crochets to build the bean stitches on. Once the single crochet row is made, you will then make a row of bean stitches and that will be the row repeat for the remainder of your project.

The placement of the bean stitch once you start repeating the rows is important. You will see in the pattern below that I included a visual video tutorial (you can also view it on YouTube) to correctly locate where to place the bean stitches. Once you do a few, it will be a mindless stitch to complete.

Crochet Bean Stitch Blanket Pattern Overview

Yarn

I used worsted weight, medium 4 weight yarn. Specifically, Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek. You can use any worsted weight yarn for this blanket. However, be sure to match the gauge for the yarn amounts and sizing to be accurate.

Crochet Hook

For this blanket, I used a 6.5 mm crochet hook (K hook). It’s a bit of a bigger hook than I normally would use for worsted weight yarn, but with the bean stitch I wanted the blanket to be less dense and have more of a drape. Again, be sure to follow the gauge for the yarn amounts and sizing to be accurate. I tend to crochet more on the loose side.

Pattern

The instructions for the pattern are written to make a lapghan size (35″ x 45″) or throw size (60″ x 60″). The lapghan size would also make a good baby blanket size. I also added the stitch multiple so you can customize the blanket to any size you’d like.

I did add yarn amounts for the lapghan and throw sized blankets and you will find that information in the pattern notes below.

For the stripe pattern, I did 10 rows of ivory and broke it up with colored stripes that are 4 rows tall. I used green, yellow, orange, and red for the stripes for a fall and autumn feel.
