Overview

This Ocean Afghan is comprised of granny squares and ocean themed appliques. The granny squares are made separately from the sea creatures. The appliques are sewn directly onto the square in which I have a video tutorial showing how to do so while leaving the back clean.

All together, the blanket makes a good size for a baby blanket or to have on display. The finished dimensions measure 30″ x 35″.

Materials

Yarn for Granny Squares

3 skeins Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Aquamarine

3 skeins Lion Brand Vanna’s Sky Blue

3 skeins Lion Brand Vanna’s Colonial Blue

6 skeins Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in White (You will have some left over of each skein that will be used for some designs and also the white left over will be used to join the granny squares together)

Yarn Colors for Appliques

(amount needed for each yarn/color listed is barely a full skein of yarn, you can certainly used scrap/left over yarn on hand)

Worsted weight yarn in the following colors: Red, Pink, Yellow, Orange, Black, Navy, Light Purple, Light Green, Dark Green, Mustard, (I used both the Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice and Lops&Threads Impecable brand for the sea horse) Pink Grapefruit (Vanna’s Choice), Red Heart Cotton Scrubby (optional for coral)

Crochet Hooks
J hook (5.0mm) G hook (4.0 mm) E hook (3.5mm)

Other

Scissors and tapestry needle

6mm safety eyes for designs (optional – can be substituted by using black yarn to sew on eyes)

Instructions

Using the patterns below, make 15 white granny squares, 5 aquarmarine squares, 5 sky blue squares, and 5 colonial blue squares. Make one of each applique and sew onto white granny squares. Join granny squares with the method you prefer following the layout below. The method done for the afghan shown in the picture is an invisible seam method.

Complete with a border by single crocheting all around with white, making sure to sc 3x into each corner.

Thank you Thank you!!! I'm so excited for another project (I already have so many and am currently working on the woodland afghan). I love your granny square projects though. It's enough variety to change it up so a project doesn't get boring and abandoned. Also, with the granny squares I truly enjoy piecing it together as I go so I can see my work coming together. Please keep the themed blankets coming!! I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Thank you so much! I agree, with this project there are many new things to work on all in one project so it's always interesting! I too love piecing it together and see it all come together, it's the best part 🙂 Happy Crocheting!

This is adorable. I just found the turtle through Meldora's Closet. I may need to start working in this as my new niece in law loves sea creatures.

Ok I'm being special. I'm new to crochet. Can you just verify for me what DC means for this pattern. Is it double crochet stitch?
