This adorable pumpkin crochet potholder is simple to make and is double sided, making it extra thick and durable. It’s the perfect project to add to your fall projects.
Crochet Potholder Yarn
As far as yarn goes, 100% cotton is your go-to when it comes to potholders and hot pads. Since you will be using these to withstand hot temperatures, you want a yarn that is not going to melt on contact.
You also want a yarn that is durable and will not pill after use and washing. Cotton yarn is also absorbent which can be a plus depending on what kind of dishes you are placing on the hot pad/potholder.
For this particular project, I used I Love This Cotton! from Hobby Lobby because it is so soft and enjoyable to work with. Typically, cotton has a bad rap for being rough to work with (literally). Because the texture can be rough and the yarn has no stretch/give whatsoever, it can be hard to work with. However, I found the I Love This Cotton! surprisingly soft to work with. Lion Brand 24/7 is another cotton yarn that is surprisingly soft for an 100% cotton yarn.
In terms of durability, I definitely recommend the I Love This Cotton! as well as Dishie from WeCrochet/Knitpicks. These are my go-to when I use cotton yarns. Dishie is a bit more rough to work with but it’s not terrible.
Fall Themed Crochet Potholders
Because I was in the fall mood and made a crochet pumpkin potholder, I had the idea to add an apple hot pad as well! I crocheted a green and a red apple to go along with the pumpkin potholder. I think they make an adorable set!
You can find the apple crochet pattern here. It is very similar, the only difference is the color change and stem portion. Plus, once you make the pumpkin potholder, you’ll want to make more! So be sure to get yarn to make the whole set.
Since they are fall themed, these potholder hot pads are perfect to use throughout the fall for hot baked dishes like casseroles, pot pies, and stews. I love adding a little fun to my table during the fall to make it extra cozy so these hot pads will be perfect!
If you want a subtle fall theme, you can also make my double sided hot pads in autumn colors!
