This crochet Halloween granny square blanket combines spooky and cute. The checkered pattern of the (pink!) granny squares along with the ghost, pumpkin, and flower appliques is sure to be the highlight blanket of the season.

I’ve created a Halloween blanket in the past similar to this concept but it has the traditional Halloween colors: green, orange, purple, black, gray, etc. The crochet appliques were very traditional as well: a spider, witch, Frankenstein, ghost, pumpkin, etc. You can check that blanket out here.
For this blanket, I wanted to add a cutesy, retro flair to it by adding flowers and making the main colors pink and ivory. I think it’s super adorable and so much fun! I definitely will be displaying this in my living area all season long!
Yarn Needed for the Halloween Blanket
I used worsted weight, acrylic yarn for this blanket which is my typical go-to when it comes to blankets. It’s the perfect weight, durable, and washable.
I specifically used I Love This Yarn! brand but you can use any brand of worsted weight yarn you’d like along with a 6.00mm and 4.00mm crochet hook.
I will have specific colors down below in the pattern, but feel free to use scrap yarn for the appliques as they don’t use much yarn to make!

Difficulty of Crochet Pattern
I would say this pattern is great for advanced beginners and intermediate crocheters.
The granny squares only use the basic stitches: slip stitch, single crochet stitch, half double crochets, and double crochets. There is also a video tutorial showing you step by step how these solid granny squares are made.
As far as the appliques, they are very simple so I think for a beginner (with the video tutorials included), they are definitely doable! They only use basic crochet stitches as well.
You will also want to know how to make a magic ring for this project, but there are other alternatives to the magic ring plus I do have a tutorial on the magic ring as well.
The sewing of the appliques can also prove a little finicky, but once you get it down it’s not so bad. I have a video tutorial showing how to sew them on so they don’t show on the back. I have also seen people use invisible thread so they can easily and quickly sew them on without worrying about what the back looks like. Lastly, you can also choose to add a fabric backing to this blanket which I think would make it extra cozy!

Customizing the Halloween Blanket (optional)
Since I have so many other Halloween themed appliques from my other Halloween blanket, I think it would be cute if you would choose to make a few other appliques to add to this blanket to your liking!
I love seeing the creativity in this crochet community and I definitely always encourage it. Here are the Halloween applique patterns that I have for my previous Halloween blanket to choose from:
I think adding a few Frankenstein granny squares and maybe a spider granny square would be cute!
Other Crochet Projects to Make with Halloween Squares
These squares are so versatile, you can either use the appliques to attach to other projects or you can use the squares to make other projects as well!
For example, you can put the squares together to make pillow covers, tote bags, wall hangings, or even a cardigan!
