This beautiful crochet scrap yarn blanket is made using the corner to corner method and the mattress stitch to seam up four panels to create a geometric design. Find the tutorial on how to make your own below.

What is a Scrap Yarn Blanket?

Essentially, it is a blanket you make from all of your yarn scraps! Left over skeins from projects, partially used skeins, or maybe even skeins you don’t have any use for can all be used for a scrap blanket! The more colors, the better for this one (in my opinion).

For this project, you will need more than just the little pieces of scraps because some rows are longer than others. Rule of thumb, I used about a palm sized ball of yarn or more for most of my longer rows.

Organizing Your Scrap Yarn

I dug out all of my scrap yarn for this blanket and put it all into one place. I only used worsted weight yarn for this project. I mainly use worsted weight yarn so that is the majority of scrap yarn that I had. If you have a lot of a different size yarn, you can use that too!

I suggest you stick to one size yarn since this particular blanket will need 4 of the same sized squares to be sewn together.

Once you have all of your yarn in one place, you can also ball or cake them up to make it easier while crocheting. This is a personal preference. I only have a few yarns that were a bit tangly so I just left them until I got to them.

I also put my smaller amounts together as I knew they would be more useful for the beginning and end row that are shorter. I wanted to make sure I would use as much of the scrap yarn as possible.

Crochet Scrap Yarn Blanket Overview

This scrap yarn crochet blanket uses worsted weight yarn and a 5.00mm crochet hook.

I used c2c with half double crochets (instead of double crochets) to make 4 squares. For each square, I increased until I had 47 rows before I started the decreases. I changed colors after every two rows.

I used the mattress stitch to seam all 4 squares together with white yarn. I added a border in white to finish it off.

Pattern Notes

Dimensions: Approximately 60″ x 60″

You can use another weight yarn but the dimensions will come out different.

If you are familiar with the corner to corner stitch using half double crochet blocks, you will want to crochet 4 squares total. For each square, keep increasing for 47 rows and then start your decreases until the square it complete. Change colors every two rows.

Video tutorial for the c2c using half double crochet blocks is above or you can follow the written pattern below.

Crochet over yarn tails as you go or you can weave in your tails at the end.

Abbreviations (US terms):

Ch = chain, hdc = half double crochet, st = stitch, sp = space, sl st = slip stitch

Crochet Pattern

Change colors every 2 rows.

Row 1: Ch 5, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and across, turn

Make note of ch 2 sp formed from beginning ch, we will be working into this sp in the next row

Row 2: Ch 5, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 2 ch, sl st into ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3hdc in same ch 2 sp, turn

Row 3 (increase row): Ch 5, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 2 ch sp, *sl st in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3hdc in same ch 2 sp, repeat from * across, turn

Repeat Row 3 (increase row) until you have 47 rows total.

We will now start decreasing the remaining rows to complete the square.

Decrease row: Ch 1, sl st into next 2 st and ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3hdc in same ch 2 sp, *sl st in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3hdc in same ch 2 sp, repeat from * across until you get to the last ch 2 sp, sl st in last ch 2 sp, turn

Repeat as many times until you only have 3 “blocks” of half double crochets left to work into.

Second to last row: Ch 1, sl st into next 2 st and ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3hdc in same ch 2 sp, sl st in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3hdc in same ch 2 sp, sl st in last ch 2 sp, turn

Last row: Ch 1, sl st into next 2 st and in ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3hdc in same ch 2 sp, sl st in next ch 2 sp.

Fasten off.

Make 4 squares total.

Assembly

Arrange the four squares to achieve the diamond geometric shape. Use photo of the blanket as a guide.

Seam together using the mattress stitch for a nearly invisible seam. You can learn how to do this by watching this video tutorial here.

Border

Use white yarn and 5.00mm crochet hook.

Attach yarn to corner of the blanket.

Round 1: Ch 1, 3sc, ch 2, sc in between the “blocks” of half double crochets, repeat from * around, making 3sc in each corner, join to first st

Round 2: Ch 1, sc, 3sc in corner, *sc, 2sc in ch 2 sp from previous row, repeat from * around, making 3sc in each corner, join to first st

Fasten off and weave in ends.
