Pumpkin Pillow Pattern Overview
This pumpkin pillow is simple to make and I think any advanced beginner and beyond will be able to make this cozy crochet project this fall.
You will start by crocheting two pillow panels and pumpkin appliques that will be attached separately. Once the pumpkins are attached to the front panel, you will add a pillow insert (no stuffing here!) and crochet around the panels to finish up the pillow. You will also have an option to add a zipper to make this a removable cover.
The crochet panels are made by alternating single crochet and double crochet stitches to create a pretty subtle texture. I used an ivory color for the main color of the pillow for a neutral look. You will repeat the same row over and over until the panel is finished.
For the pumpkins, you can choose any color you want, but I chose more of a pastel/bright color combination for a pop of color on my neutral colored background. I think using more earthy tones will also create a great autumn vibe.
Pumpkin Pillow Materials
For this crochet project, you will need worsted weight yarn. I used the following colors: ivory, orange, pink, yellow, teal, and green.
I used I Love This Yarn! in Ivory for the main part of the pillow/the pillow panels. Then I used yarn from my stash for the pumpkins. I ended up making 4 different colored pumpkins (orange, pink, teal, and yellow), so I didn’t need much of each color. Then I used green yarn for the stem of the pumpkins.
For the insert, I used a 20″ x 12″ pillow insert. I found a two pack on Amazon and thought it was a good deal.
For a removable cover, I also used an ivory colored 20″ zipper but this is optional. If you are adding a zipper, you will also want a needle, thread, and pins to attach the zipper.
Fall Pillow Inspiration and Ideas
Although I think this makes a great cozy pillow, you can also switch up the appliques! Since the pumpkins are attached separately, you can easily add or substitute a different applique for a different look.
I have a bunch of different Fall AND Halloween appliques I designed from my themed granny square blankets. Leaves, scarecrows, sunflowers, acorns, ghosts, witches, spiders, candy corn, etc, etc.
All of the appliques can be found in my posts with the Fall Themed Blanket Pattern and the Halloween Themed Blanket Pattern.

Pattern Notes
Beginning chain of each row does not count as a stitch.
You can easily make this pillow any size you want by adding or subtracting in multiples of 2 for the beginning chain, then adding or subtracting number of rows. You will also want to make more or less pumpkins to attach to the pillow.
Adding a zipper is optional. If you do not want to add a zipper, you can just crochet all the way around to close the pillow entirely.

Assembly
Arrange pumpkins on one of the panels and make sure everything is spaced as evenly as possible. Attach by either sewing them on or gluing with fabric glue or hot glue. This will be the front panel.
Attaching zipper: You will need a 20” zipper, needle&thread, and pins.
Place the front sides of the pillow panels faced down and the bottom edges facing each other. Center the zipper and pin the sides of the zipper to the bottom edges.
Using needle and thread, sew on each side of the zipper to the bottom edge of the pillow panels. You can open the zipper once it is pinned in place to make this easier. Make small frequent stitches along both sides to make sure the zipper is tightly secured to the bottom edge of each panel.
Once the zipper is sewed on each side, zip up the zipper and fold in half so the front panel is on top of the back panel.
Use ivory colored yarn and 6.00mm crochet hook to crochet the remaining sides of the pillow panels together. Single crochet around and make 3 single crochets in each corner. Fasten off and weave in ends.
