Tips for Crochet Potholders and Hot Pads
Whether you call it a potholder or hot pad, these useful kitchen items are made to protect your kitchen surfaces from hot dishes and plates.
Because they are going to come into contact with hot dishes, it is important to use 100% cotton yarn for potholders and hot pads. Using acrylic yarn could result in melting, which would make an inconvenient mess and inadvertently not be so protective of the surfaces you’re trying to protect in the first place!
Another tip is you want the crocheted potholder to be thick and preferably have no gaps or holes. Making it double thick and with smaller basic stitches will ensure a good, sturdy potholder that does it’s job well.

Crochet Pumpkin Pie Potholder Pattern Overview
This fun and adorable potholder is made to look like a pumpkin pie – whip cream included! This pumpkin pie hot pad is perfect for your own personal use throughout autumn and fall, especially for Thanksgiving when the table is covered with yummy hot plates of food. It would also be a great item to have to sell at craft fairs and markets!
You will need 100% cotton yarn in orange, tan, and white. I used I Love This Cotton! in the colors bruschetta, taupe, and white. This is one of the more “soft” cotton yarns and your hands will surely thank you as it is not rough like many of the other 100% cotton yarns on the yarn shelves out there.
You will also need a crochet hook, specifically a G or 4.00mm sized crochet hook. We want a smaller sized hook to make the fabric dense and sturdy.
The overall pattern is pretty simple and straight forward. We will make two circles (one in orange and one in the tan color) and crochet them together for the potholder to have a double thickness. The border is made with bobbles for the around the edge pie crust texture.
To top it off, there is a little crocheted dollop of whip cream to go right in the center of the pie. And of course, there is a loop that is crocheted with chains so this adorable pumpkin pie can be hung up as decor in the kitchen as well as a handy tool.
