Crochet Tropical Fish Applique Free Pattern

Crochet this tropical fish applique with this free, quick and easy crochet pattern. This tropical fish is part of a larger crochet project – The Ocean Themed Granny Square Afghan. Whether you are making this fish for that project or another ocean inspired project, it will be worked up in no time!

Free Crochet Tropical Fish Applique Pattern

Materials

Worsted weight yarn in teal and yellow

G/4.00 mm crochet hook

6mm safety eye

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Pattern Notes

Abbreviations (US terms):

Ch = chain, sc = single crochet, sc2tog = single crochet two together, sc3tog = single crochet three together, dc = double crochet, st = stitch

Pattern

Body

Use yellow yarn.

Row 1: Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next ch, turn

Row 2: Ch 1, 2sc in each st across, turn

Row 3: Ch 1, 2sc in first st, sc in next 2 st, 2sc in last st, turn

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn

Row 5: Ch 1, 2sc in first st, sc in next 4 st, 2sc in last st, turn

Row 6: Ch 1, 2sc in first st, sc in next 6 st, 2sc in last st, turn

Row 7: Ch 1, 2sc in first st, sc in next 9 st, turn

Row 8: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn

Row 9: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 st, sc in next 9 st, turn

Row 10: Ch 1, sc in next 8 st, sc2tog over next 2 st, turn

Row 11: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 st, sc in next 7 st, turn

Row 12: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 st, sc in next 4 st, sc2tog over next 2 st, turn

Row 13: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 st, sc in next 2 st, sc2tog over next 2 st, turn

Row 14: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 st, sc2tog over next 2 st, turn

Row 15: Ch 1, (sc, sl st) into first st, sc in next st, fasten off.

Tail

Use teal yarn and attach to row 1 of the body.

Row 1: Ch 1, 2sc in each st across, turn

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn

Row 3: Ch 2, 2dc in first st, sc in next 2 st, (2dc, sl st) in last st, fasten off

Top Fin

Use teal yarn.

Attach on the side of Row 10 on the top of the body (start counting the rows from the tail – the tail should pointing to the left).

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in next 3 st, 2dc 4 spaces down onto the body, *sc in next 2 st, 2dc 4 spaces down onto the body, repeat from * one more time, turn

Row 2: Ch 1, sc across until you get to the last st, fasten off.

Side Fin

Use teal yarn. This will be made separately then sewn onto the body.

Row 1: Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, turn

Row 2: Ch 1, sc3tog, fasten off. Leave a yarn tail and sew onto body.

Add safety eye onto face.
