Yarn for Crochet Coasters
Whether you are using your coasters for hot or cold drinks, 100% cotton yarn is a must. It is absorbent for cold drinks and is a more durable material for hot drinks and won’t melt.
There are many 100% cotton yarns out on the market but my favorites are I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby and Knit Picks Dishie Yarn. Both are durable, worsted weight yarns that are enjoyable to work with. They aren’t rough like other cotton yarns you may have come across. The colors that I’ve worked with did not bleed onto my skin, which I’ve had problems with in the past with other cotton yarns.

Crochet Halloween Frankenstein Coaster Pattern Overview
This coaster is double thick so we will make two sides and then crochet them together.
Each square is 16 stitches by 12 rows in height, which makes it a very quick project. Once the two squares are complete, you will stitch on the “scar” with the black yarn and a tapestry needle. That square will be the front of the coaster. Don’t worry about what the back looks like because that will be hidden on the inside.
The squares are joined by single crocheting them together. Any ends can be woven in or what I did was use a tapestry needle to put the ends in between the two sides and then cut off any excess.

Crochet Pattern Notes
This coaster is double thick, so you will make two squares and crochet them together.
The beginning stitch of each row does not count as a stitch.
When working the double crochets down into the previous row, give your tension some slack to give the stitch some height.
Dimensions: 4.5” x 4.5”
Abbreviations: (US terms)
Ch = chain, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, st = stitch
Pattern
Start with the green yarn.
Row 1: Ch 17, hdc into 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn
Row 2-10: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn
Change to black yarn.
Row 11: Ch 1, hdc in first 2 st, dc down into previous row, *sc in next st, dc down into previous row, repeat from * across, hdc in the last st, turn
Row 12: Ch 1, hdc in each st across
Fasten off.
Make two squares.
Using a tapestry needle and black yarn, sew a scar onto one of the squares. Use photo as a guide.
Assembly
Hold both squares together and single crochet them together. Make sure the square with the scar is on top and facing outward. Change yarn colors as needed.
